For fifty years Wolfgang Gäfgen (born 1936 in Hamburg) has enjoyed an outstanding reputation in Germany and France for his drawings, and as an important printmaker. In 1977 a group of his drawings was shown at the documenta 6. Although Gäfgen has long preferred etchings and has recently produced virtuoso mezzotints, in the late 1980s the artist turned to making large woodcuts. Gäfgen s prints occupy a special position among contemporary relief prints, since none of them reflect the typical characteristics of woodcuts. The artist deliberately elects to work with neutral plywood panels, which have no grain, and he dispenses with all expressive gestures when carving and printing.
